PhD Saskia D. Keesstra. Her main aim is to find scientific solutions for societal issues; and process knowledge for sustainable development. Her research focuses on understanding the processes that determine sustainable land and water use and the processes related to pre- and post-fire management. Process knowledge enables an explanation of the impact of natural (climate change, fire) and human drivers (land and water management) on the catchment systems and which consequences these drivers have for water and sediment connectivity. An improved understanding of the catchment sediment and water dynamics will empower sustainable land, water and fire management to design sustainable management strategies in agriculture and nature conservation. This will help to mitigate soil threats like erosion and off-side water and sediment accumulation with the help of nature’s forces (Nature-Based Solutions). This knowledge is necessary to be able to design sustainable management strategies in agriculture and nature conservation including pre- and post-fire management. In addition, she focuses on interaction with stakeholders, from farmers to policymakers, which is essential to come to usable, acceptable tools for sustainable land management and achieve the Sustainable Development Goals.
